The Great Pick 'em Dilemma

Winston-Salem, NC -- Who won week nine in the famous "Football Pick 'em Pool?" Here's the scenario for everyone to argue and voice their opinion:

Friday, November 2nd
  • 3:13 p.m. - Monty e-mails his picks for week 8.

Sunday, November 4th
  • Approximately 10:15 a.m. - The Commissioner begins compiling everyone's picks.
  • 10:31 a.m. - The Commissioner notifies Monty that he turned in the wrong picks.
  • 1:00 p.m. - The first couple of games kick-off.
  • 1:13 p.m. - The chart is distributed to the group.
  • 1:22 p.m. - Monty and Kevin both turn in their week 9 picks.

Monday, November 5th

  • 7:50 p.m. - Kevin e-mails the Commissioner and says, "I'll take the home teams then -- rules are rules."

As Commissioner, it is my duty to enforce the rules and regulations of this pool. I do not make-up rules "on the spot." In this particular instance, I referred to the "Football Pick'em Official Rulebook."

Article I, Section I states: "All players must turn in their picks before the first kick-off of that particular week."

Article IV, Section II states: "A player may change his/her picks asmany times as possible before the pre-set deadline." The deadline was determined at the start of the season to be 1:00 p.m. on Sundays except when a Thursday or Saturday game occurs.

Further...

Article VII, Section I states: "The Commissioner does not have the obligation to remind any player to turn in their picks under any circumstances."

Monty even had 2 hours and 29 minutes to revise his picks!

After further review, the call still stands -- Barb takes home the cake, while Brice receives a small portion as the Monday night winner. Now tell me, how is my ruling incorrect?

The ruling is in no way incorrect. You are correct in your ruling 100%

I agree 110% with the ruling on the field! You have well documented the situation and I see that you went above and beyond the call of duty.... I mean does the ref warn the other team when they have too many men on the field?? NO, I think not!
Further more, this Katie nonsense is just killing me....is she serious?? "it's just football" I mean that seems to be cause for a fine or suspension!!! Thats like taunting!!! I'd throw out a flag on her!!!!

#1, your analogy is flawed. The scenario here is more like saying that the Redskins (who let's say are going to be 13-3 at the end of the year) do not get the NFC East crown because those wins did not come fairly (for whatever reason). However, they still get to keep their 13 wins. As commissioner, you either have to take away some of those wins (or all: see Oklahoma in ~2005) so that the team with the most W's legitimately wins the NFC East, or else you just have to just give the Redskins the crown. You cannot on the other hand give another team the crown while having a different team with more wins.

This is the case in hand. Brian is counting my picks (that I consciously made) which gives me less points for the week, but this should also give me the monday night loot. I don't mind if he does this and authenticates the Monday Night win, or he can give me the home teams which would give me more points but no Monday night loot. Now I'm stuck with less points and no monday night money. Overall, you can't just take a little bit of A and a little bit of B so that it works in favor of everyone else; rather the commish needs to take either all of A or all of B.

As Commish, I'm giving you one extra point by accepting your picks and DQ'ing your eligibility from the Monday night win. If I took away your "A" and "B" scenario, you'd have one less point. Therefore, this works in your favor subtlely, while the loot goes to the players who abided by the rules.

Subsequently, Monty did not win the week, but I gave him his points... 12, which he turned in after the deadline versus 9, the number of home team victories.

Kevin, I do understand what you are saying. Your arguement is not without merit. However, I still agree with Brian's decision.

I think you should consider yourself lucky to even have home team picks when you miss the deadline.

The fact of the matter is, the commish is giving you an extra point and you should be happy he gives you points at all. We have a week to turn in picks. I mean come on. Lets get with it. This ain't college no more boy, where you can turn things in whenever for half credit. This be the REAL WORLD. Now go cut the grass!

ok K-Fed, just like a guy to bring up situations that I would know nothing about seeing as I'm a girl and all and my genes don't allow me to know everything that has ever happened about every team...

a similar situation just happened today in the SECOND grade class that I was in, the student wasn't paying attention, didn't follow the directions (or the rules) that the teacher gave, ended up doing more than he needed to and because he didn't listen to the teacher's directions he got a zero for the assignment...even though he would have gotten the highest grade in the class if it were supposed to be done the way he had done it....
point being: Rules are rules is what we are teaching our second graders....why do we have to do this with a college graduate too???

I have no problem with taking the home teams. As I said first "rules are rules." My problem is that he did not give me home teams and therefore I get less points. If I got my picks in on time I would have less points (which is what I ended up with)HOWEVER I would have also won the Monday night game. Now I get neither more points nor the Monday Night money.

You're misinterpreting it. I'm giving you an extra point by accepting your picks. You picked 10 correctly whereas only 9 home teams won. I'm just excluding you from winning any prize money since the picks were turned in past the specified deadline.

So is thing over now? We've got a new set of picks to get to. Don't forget all of you little bros!

"I'm liking this a lot!"

You're more than welcome to come down early -- Wake is playing NC State during the day on Saturday. I'm sure Monty can get you in somehow. Just an FYI.
