Mel Kiper Jr. Weekend

Winston-Salem, NC -- The NFL Draft is becoming more overhyped than the Super Bowl. What lures us to it? It's the combination of two things: 1. College Football, 2. The NFL becoming America's Pastime. We get to see the stars of college football become millionaires if their name is called in the first round. Do you feel bad for Brady Quinn? I read somewhere that he'll lose $20M by being selected 22nd rather than 3rd.

Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler all do an admirable job on College Gameday. Mark May and Lou Holtz are good studio analysts. Many will disagree on Corso and May since they're both ND haters. But here's the number one reason why the NFL Draft is so hyped: eligibility. In order to play professional football, you must play 3 years in college. We get to see the NFL's stars of tomorrow at our universities. Think about it... next in line for coverage of drafts: the NBA. With the new CBA, to be eligible in the NBA, you must play 1 year in college. And in baseball, 70% of the players are drafted out of high school. Now, you see why the draft coverage is what it is. We have no idea who baseball's future stars will be unless they receive some coverage in the minor leagues AFTER they've been drafted.

What would Mel Kiper Jr. be doing if it weren't for the NFL draft? He's become a celebrity based on ranking college players. He is a bit terse if a GM selects a player that didn't agree with his projection as evidenced by Miami bypassing Brady Quinn and the Igles selecting a QB with their first pick. My favorite quote from the weekend comes from Vernon Davis, who was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers last year in the first round. Q: "What was the one thing that surprised you most last year when you were drafted?" A: "Mel Kiper Jr.'s hair; I didn't realize how shiny it was. How does he do that?"

Time will tell if Quinn is a better quarterback than Russell. I think he is, and I think the Browns were lucky as hell to get him.

Lee Corso and Mark May are both douches.

Lou Holtz rules!

Quinn sucks dawg.

Yes, Quinn sucks. That's exactly why he holds just about every major passing record at Notre Dame, where no good quarterbacks have every played before.

I was worried that the Cowboys would take him at #22 and he would go on to be this legendary QB. My brother informed me not to worry because he's not that good -- he chokes in the big games.

Brendo: If he went to the Cowboys, would you still root for him?

The vikings and dolphins - two teams in desperate need of a QB said "no way" to this guy. As did the 13 teams after them. Most teams didn't have him rated any higher than the QB from stanford. He is surprisingly inaccurate, and, as brian said , he is horrible in big games. Furthermore, he was running Charlie Weis scheme, which created a lot of opportunities for him to succeeed. I would venture to say that a lot of his success came from the system he ran. I don't think he's anything specia. But, I will be rooting for the Browns this season all the same.

That's ridiculous to say that he didn't come through in big games. Quinn is an excellent player, and Charlier Weis is an excellent judge of quarterback character and ability (e.g. Tom Brady). Anyone who says that Quinn chokes in big games didn't see him basically singlehandedly give us two wins against Michigan State and UCLA in the past year. The talent gap between us and Michigan, USC, and LSU was just too great for one player to win those games for us. The Dolphins are idiots, and everyone thinks they're idiots for turning down Quinn. Their own fans booed them on draft day because of it . . . what does that tell you? There is no way that John Beck will be a better qb than Quinn, and even Ted Ginn was surprised that the fish drafted him instead of BQ. We'll see what kind of NFL career he has, and we can play the "I told you so" game later.
